meeting 10-3-11
today went very well indeed! our topic was hate crime. Wolfgang got into a heavy debate with Mr. Rozanas as always. it brings up a very good point. in our school and community, what can we do to help the stop of hate crime? further more if you say "stop that is offensive." but some else for example says "well your sign offends me." how do we handle this sort of situation? that was our homework today! :) after the meeting we played two rounds of "Werewolves of Mahatten" a fun role play game that can get laughs and others to get involved :) that's all for now!!! PEACE! ~ President
next meeting is Monday the 10th of October! topic: secondary nomination round, introduce Ally week, games day :)

HRC Black Tie Dinner
the President and Myself were invited to the HRC Black Tie Dinner. it was held yesterday June 11, 2011, downtown at The Grand America Hotel. i would guess that over 300 showed up to this event, including Ms. Dotti-es Dixon, Joe Solmonese President of the HRC, Brue Bastian, Patrick Murphy, Eric Alva, Micheal Fifield, Sarah Viola, Valerie Larabee, Utah House of representatives: Jackie Biskupski and Rebecca Chavez-Houck.
we also had a performance by Crystal Waters! and she was extraordinary! :)
the food was fa-nominal! we were served a three course dinner. we first had salad, followed by an out of this world Chicken dinner which was, dare i say it? better than moms home cookin! than we had a choice of Chocolate covered brownie or cheesecake with raspberry sauce. along with speeches from some of the people listed and the amazing performance from Crystal Waters, it was an all over great collection of people wanting the same things. we didn't take part in the action, but I'm sure they raised a lot of money!
i look forward to going back again next year!!

Pride Festival 2011
the group of Alta G.S.A. members able to come and support ALTA in the Parade this year. we had Alex, Debi, Miriah, Wolfgang and Mrs. Martin. we were towards the front of the parade (about three groups behind the motorcycles). it was hot, and i don't think i have EVER seen so many people at the festival in my life! they say it was larger than the Days of 41 parade. that's HUGE!!! i do believe it was a huge success!!! Alex, Wolfgang and Miriah stayed until about 3:30 that Sunday. it was hot, and PACKED! we all had a great time, and hopefully we can get twice as many members to come next year!!
Alex and Debi
Presidant and Vice Presidant of the Alta High School G.S.A. :)
WHEN YOU SAY "THAT'S SO GAY" DO YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU SAY?
|
|
KNOCK IT OFF!
what do YOU say to "that's so gay"?
Stop It
• Keep it simple with quick responses. You could say:
"Remember, we don't use put-downs." "It's not OK to say 'That's so gay.' ''
"That's not OK to use that phrase."
"What did you mean by that?"
"Do you know what gay means?"
"You may not have meant to be hurtful, but when you use the word gay to mean something is bad or stupid, it is hurtful."
"Do you know why it is hurtful?"
• If you have the time and opportunity to educate on the spot, do it. If you do not, make time later.
Educate
• If you have been hearing the phrase, "That's so gay" to mean that something is bad or stupid, take the time during a class, meeting or group time to make sure that your friends know what gay means and know why it is hurtful.
• Be clear with others that when they use the word "gay" in a negative way they are being disrespectful. Also, be clear that using the phrase, "That's so gay" is hurtful to others who may have parents, aunts or uncles, other family members who are gay, or themselves might one day identify as gay.
• In lessons on respect, stereotypes or prejudice include discrimination against lesbian and gay people.
Be Proactive
• Develop an environment of respect and caring for all in your class and school. (that's us!)
• Establish clear schoolwide and classroom policies against name-calling and hurtful teasing.
• If you have been hearing the phrase, "That's so gay" in your class or school, be explicit that rules against name-calling includes that phrase and other anti-gay put downs.
Don't Ignore It
• Ignoring name-calling and hurtful teasing allows it to continue and possibly get worse. If others see you do nothing, they get the message that there is nothing wrong with it.
• Harassment does not “go away on it’s own.”
Don't Be Afraid of Making the Situation Worse
• Almost any response is better than ignoring the situation. You may not know exactly what to say, but you must stop the harassment.
• Taking action reaffirms limits. Interrupting name-calling isn't always easy. With experience you will become more comfortable in handling it.
Don't Excuse the Behavior
• Saying," Josh, doesn't really know what it means, " or "Sarah was only joking," excuses hurtful behavior.
Don't Try to Judge How Upset the Victim Was
• We have no way of knowing how a victim is really feeling. Often, victims are embarrassed and pretend that they were not offended or hurt. Saying, "Michael didn't seem upset by Laura's remark" trivializes the victim's feelings. It tells the harasser that it is OK to make hurtful comments. It teaches not only the victim but also anyone else in hearing range that they will not be protected from harassment.
Don't Be Immobilized By Fear
• Making a mistake is far less serious than not acting at all. You can always go back to the person and say or do something else if you feel you did not respond well.
